The church was probably built in the 12th century. Originally there was a particularly valuable piece here, an alabaster altar from around 1430. This is now in Gottorf Castle in Schleswig. The current carved altar is the most important work of art in the church. It was created in 1510, but did not come to Schwabstedt until 1834.

The Schwabstedt church, with the last stork's nest in the village, is one of the oldest church buildings in North Friesland. The Schwabstedt church was built around 1160, originally it was a Romanesque fieldstone building, which lost much of its simple beauty through renovations. The church has had a roof turret (tower) since 1889, and a large church clock was installed as early as 1644, which is now in the museum.ets-radweg.de/details/anzeige/event/st-jakobi-kirche-schwabstedt
