Hiking

A quiet place of remembrance and an important testimony to Jewish history in the Hunsrück region. The small cemetery was likely established around 1800 and today still preserves around 30 historical gravestones. An information board at the entrance tells the moving story of the Jewish community of Hennweiler and Bruschied, as well as the fate of the cemetery during the Nazi era. Anyone visiting this place should approach it with calm and respect – a place to pause and remember.

In 1938 the cemetery was desecrated: the tombstones were overturned and the fencing destroyed. In 1939 the Jews had to sell their synagogue and cemetery to the political community. In 1939/40 the trees in the cemetery were felled by soldiers stationed in Hennweiler. The cemetery should be cleared and sold as building land. Some of the tombstones were stolen, some used as building material.

The cemetery was established before 1811 and was occupied until the first half of the 20th century and then again in 1985 and 1986. Since 1895, the deceased Jews from Bruschied were buried in Hennweiler.
