Of the former church, only the east tower, which is divided by three cornices, towers over the Zell-Merl district. Today's parish church is the monastery church of the former Minorite monastery, which was founded around 1290. Inside the single-nave church is an Antwerp carved altar from around 1525, one of the most magnificent
and most beautiful of this kind counts. The oldest roof truss in Germany (1290) is above the sacristy.

This church was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

The parish church of St. Michael, which was built around 1320 in the early Gothic style, is the former monastery church of the Minorite monastery of 1290. The remarkable retable in the Antwerp style from 1520 is one of the best preserved of its kind.
