      Elisabethen fountain

      Fountain guide reference: 31

      Location: Elisabethenstrasse / Klosterberg
      Artist: Rudolf Heinrich Meili
      in operation since: 1862
      listed as a monument: no
History / Description: The Elisabethen fountain has two basins and the fountain column is in three parts. The stone sculpture shows Saint Elisabeth (she lived from 1207 - 1231 and strove for voluntary poverty. She was canonized just four years after her death and is considered the "patron saint of beggars") with a jug of water and a loaf of bread in her hand. Under Elisabeth stands a basilisk holding a Basel coat of arms. At the same height on the opposite side there are two bronze swans with water flowing from their beaks. The lower trough receives its water from two spouts shaped like dolphins.
Special features: About a hundred meters from here stands the Elisabethen Church, which was built between 1857 and 1864.

Elisabeth, the daughter of a Hungarian king, followed the philosophy of the Franciscan monks and distributed bread and water to the poor at the age of 16. She died at the young age of 24.
There are also many details to marvel at in the "lower" part of the fountain. For example, two fish-like stone figures that serve as water taps. But these are not fish, says Christiane Widmer, but dolphins. "Until the Middle Ages, dolphins were depicted like this. With a huge head, big eyes and fins on their necks."
