The approximately 96-hectare nature reserve is located in the town of Nordhorn, about three kilometers south-east of Nordhorn. The area has been under nature protection since 1936.
The special importance of the area for nature conservation lies in the characteristic sequence of valley lowlands, terraced slopes and valley edge dunes that can still be experienced there in the cross-section of a river landscape, which can hardly be found in a comparable form anywhere in the country.
