The Evangelical Lutheran Mary Magdalene Church is located on Stübeheide Street on the edge of the Frank settlement in the Klein Borstel district of Hamburg. It was named after Mary Magdalene, Jesus' companion and witness to his resurrection.
The church was planned as part of the local supply facilities that were necessary for the new Frank settlement. On the back wall of the chancel in the pastorate garden is the foundation stone that shows it was built in 1938. From the laying of the foundation stone on February 6, 1938 to the inauguration on the 3rd of Advent, December 11, 1938, both the raw brick building and most of the interior were completed. The architects Bernhard Hopp and Rudolf Jäger took into account the desire for community rooms in the tower in their planning, so that it was given a massive shape that offers space for two additional tower rooms above the organ gallery.

The actual church interior can be expanded through the vestibule by sinking the small glass window panes with their frames into the partition wall to the nave. In total, the nave can accommodate over 400 visitors. The total external length of the church is around 31.5 m and the width is around 18 m.

The inscription on the beam above the partition reads: “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:11 EU). In 1965, the baptismal font planned by the architect Hopp in 1938 was realized by Fritz Fleer.

It all started very small as a house group in the private house of the Teuchert couple in Stübeheide.

At first, Klein Borstel still belonged to Lukas Fuhlsbüttel, but via Dr. Günther, as the first “own” pastor and his successors, developed church life. Nevertheless, it seems almost a miracle that the church Maria Magdalenen was built when, due to political reasons, no church building was actually approved. Nevertheless, construction was carried out, however without iron and steel. The impending Second World War also prompted the builders to arrange additional basement rooms under the tower on two levels below one another - an air-raid shelter.

The church remained intact during the war and in 1947 AD Maria Magdalenen became an independent parish.
