Borghorst has a long history, already in 1450 it is known as a village.

Borghorst consists of Borg and Horst. Borg means castle in Low German. Horst means wood, bush, undergrowth.

The noble estate of Borghorst was successively owned by various important Schleswig-Holstein families: 1450 BC Rantzau; 1500 BC Ahlefeldt; 1564 BC Rantzau; 1593 BC rum ear; 1671 BC thienen; 1723 BC flower; 1742 BC torments; 1800 BC Ahlefeldt; 1815 BC agony.

The estate experienced its heyday with Josias von Qualen, the grand prince's privy councilor. In 1742 von Qualen acquired the estate from his father-in-law, Wulf Blome, when he married his daughter Elisabeth.

Although the manor house was already built in 1450 by BC. Rantzau's conversion with a defensive moth gave it a stately appearance, it is ultimately due to Josias von Qualen that Borghorst achieved the highest reputation.

On the one hand due to the expansion of agricultural areas to almost 2000 ha. On the other hand due to the advent of the Enlightenment, examples: management and administration of agricultural operations (depiction of the performance process in accounts), social affairs (abolition of serfdom) and politics.

The manor house is a simple one-storey transverse building with two short projecting side wings, a brick building on a low fieldstone base. The middle section has seven window axes, the front side of the wings three each, the narrow sides of the house four each, the rear facade a total of thirteen window axes. The building is almost completely undivided. Only in the middle of the front is a risalit crowned by a triangular gable with a round ox-eye slightly raised by protruding pilasters.

Choose a time of year when there are no leaves on the trees for your visit, otherwise you only have a very limited view of the Borghorst manor house. You can't drive any further, it's all private.
