Until the Blumenthal colliery 1 and 2 colliery was closed in 2003, the Hellbach was mainly used for the waste water disposal of the colliery and the Recklinghausen city area. After the mine was closed, the city of Recklinghausen and the Emschergenossenschaft decided to renaturalize the Hellbach as part of the project to renovate the Emscher system and widen the river bed. This required a separation of the remaining wastewater from spring and rain water. In addition, effective flood protection had to be guaranteed in the dense settlement area. For this purpose, a 1.4 km long sewer parallel to the stream and a retention basin have been built on the middle course since 2005. In April 2019, this sewer was connected to the Emscher sewer.
