The pointer is an eccentric standing 8.50 m high stainless steel obelisk that casts its shadow on the circular surface with a diameter of 62 m. The surface, which is modeled on the solarium of the Roman emperor Augustus, consists of light paving stones. It is pulled through by 20 cm wide lanes of black plaster. This very precise design allows the visitor, with suitable weather conditions, an accurate reading of the time (true local time) and the date.
