The approximately 3,000 m² horizontal sundial is located on the southern plateau at an altitude of about 140 m above sea level. NN. The pointer is an eccentric standing 8.50 m high stainless steel obelisk that casts its shadow on the circular surface with a diameter of 62 m. The surface, which is modeled on the solarium of the Roman emperor Augustus, consists of light paving stones. It is pulled through by 20 cm wide lanes of black plaster. This very precise design allows the visitor, with suitable weather conditions, an accurate reading of the time (true local time) and the date. For this purpose, numerous explanations have been admitted in the area. A special feature is that the surface is made absolutely flat. In order to prevent puddling, a porous plaster was used, through which the water gets into the subsoil.

The Halde Hoheward is a tailings dump in the Ruhr area. It was created from deposits from the Recklinghausen II colliery, the Ewald colliery and the General Blumenthal/Haard colliery. When visibility is good, the Rheinturm in Düsseldorf, about 50 km away, can be seen.
