Tips

  • Westerhaus Castle is located on the Westerberg hill and is considered the largest estate in Rheinhessen. The estate's owners, Ivonne and Johannes Graf von Schönburg, are the fourth generation to run the business. You can register for a wine tasting or take home a bottle of wine as a souvenir. More information about the winery can be found here: schloss-westerhaus.de.

  • Westerhaus Castle is the largest estate in Rheinhessen. It stands on the Westerberg near Großwinternheim near Ingelheim am Rhein.
In 1408 there is a first documented mention of a hus und ecker uff deme Westirberge. It is assumed that the actual founding dates back a long time and is related to the founding of Charlemagne's imperial palace in Ingelheim in the 8th century. The General Directorate for Cultural Heritage assigns the first mention in its list of cultural monuments in Ingelheim am Rhein to the year 1190. The Counts of Bolanden and Ingelheim resided in Westerhaus Castle for over 600 years. As a fiefdom of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Westerhaus Castle was owned by the Counts of Ingelheim for over 400 years until it was expropriated by French revolutionary troops at the beginning of the 19th century.
On October 4, 1900, Heinrich Opel from Rüsselsheim, one of Adam Opel's five sons, acquired the property to expand it into a model estate.
The property includes a stud with a striking riding hall. In the 1930s Irmgard von Opel was probably the best rider in the world in military and jumping saddles at the time.
