With bare hiking boots, but at least with hiking sticks, it is possible to cross the glacier edge on the advertised (and marked) hiking trail, but I wouldn't necessarily call it "fun". An alternative route from the Braunschweiger Hütte to the Rettenbachferner car park is the Pitztaler Jöchl, where you can do without a glacier traverse.
