This dramatic Munro sits to the north of Glen Shiel and the south of Glen Affric in a fantastically remote location. It’s 3,212 feet (979 m) and is not to be confused with a similarly named peak, Sgurr na Ciste Dhuibh which is a short way to the west and part of the Five Sisters of Kintail. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious though, you can bag the Sisters and this Ciste Dhubh on the same day.

Approaches vary depending on which other Munros you fancy taking a selfie on during your adventure. You can ascend Ciste Dhubh in isolation, starting from the car park at the western end of Loch Cluanie. You could also take the glen route from Morvich in the north west, sticking to Gleann Lichd until you reach the foot of Ciste Dhubh. Alternatively, you can approach from any number of nearby mountains or from Glen Affric. Immediately north of the mountain you’ll find Camban bothy, a useful place for an overnight stop in this wild place.

Tips

  • Ciste Dhubh is a 3,212-foot (979 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. I have delightful memories of this Munro from my peak bagging round in the summer of 2019. We approached it in the late evening as the sun was setting and the sky was glowing magnificently all around us. It was our seventh Munro of the day (having started back in Morvich and hiked over the Sisters of Kintail and the Three Brothers to get there). And it was our 14th Munro in 2 days (having traversed the South Glen Shiel Ridge the previous day). Our descent would see us drop down the northwest side of the mountain to Camban bothy for some much needed rest.
