The main port station Hamburg Süd developed from a sideline to the former petroleum port from 1880. In 1893 there was a connection to the main track of the state railway and the associated expansion of the facility. The station served 41 quay sheds, extensive coal stores, numerous industrial companies and the large shipyards, and originally also opened up port facilities west of the Köhlbrand.
