Impressive former customs castle, which stands on an island in front of Kaub. Visible from far away from the Rheinsteig.

Gutenfels Castle was built as Kaub (Cube) castle from 1220, perhaps on behalf of the empire. Already in 1252 it was besieged unsuccessfully by William of Holland. In 1277 the lords of Falkenstein transferred the castle and town of Kaub to the Count Palatine as a fief. By 1289 they sold their possessions in and around Kaub with the castle to Count Palatine Ludwig.

In the 14th century the curtain wall was built and the attack side was provided with a kennel. At the same time the plateau of the western outer bailey was built.

After Landgrave Wilhelm von Hessen besieged the castle for 39 days without success in 1504, Elector Ludwig the Peaceful of the Palatinate renamed it Gutenfels. He had it restored and expanded in 1508 (southern Zwinger).

The roundabout in the west, with a basement, dates from the time of the Thirty Years' War. During this time the castle was conquered several times.

Until 1803 it was the quarters of a crew of disabled people. In 1793 handed over to the French without a fight, Napoleon had it blown up in 1806.

After Friedrich Gustav Habel had saved the castle from demolition by buying it in 1833, it was rebuilt in 1889-1892 according to plans by the architect Gustav Walter, whereby the original structure and the ruin character were largely retained.

As of December 31, 2006, the castle was sold to private customers and is not open to the public. Until then, the castle complex was used as a hotel.

The long fallow vineyard terraces at the foot of the castle have been repaired since 2008 and replanted with vines. They belong to the Middle Rhine wine-growing region.

Gutenfels Castle is a very special jewel in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.
