The youngest and only surviving of the four former city gates was built as a gate tower with a high watch around 1555 at the request and expense of the citizens. With its additional function as a second high watch - alongside the high watch tower at the city church - the gate tower is today the most important witness to the former city fortifications with gates, watchtowers and ditches. The city gates used to be closed in the evening. The evening closing of the gates was announced by the ringing of the gate bell. Since 1833, the gates have also remained open at night, in accordance with a city council resolution.

Markgröningen is on the German half-timbered road. There are also parts of the medieval city fortifications with a younger gate tower (1555). A closer look reveals relics of the imperial castle, which was formerly separated from the city, and the castle integrated into the wall ring in its place, which was first converted into a workhouse and occasionally used as a teacher’s seminar. Today the building ensemble houses the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium, jointly supported by the district and the city.

Top preserved city gate. Very nice to look at. The end of a great historical city center.
