Many hills in our landscape indicate progressive karstification. After the limestone has been washed out and leached out, the soil cover collapses here and there. A number of these sinkholes have been sealed by washed-in clay over long periods of time and are capable of holding water. Natural and man-made hills were a prerequisite for the settlement of the arid Alb plateau.
