Austria's last emperor, Charles I, was forced into exile in 1918 and, after a stay in Switzerland, came to Madeira in November 1921. Here he and his wife first lived in the "Villa Victoria", right next to the Reid's Palace Hotel. Later he moved up to Monte with all his children to the Quinta do Monte.
