The first town hall in Funchal was built in 1486 on what was then Campo do Duque, near the Sé Cathedral. The town council always met in this square until around 1784. After that there was a period of several moves until the town hall was moved to Largo da Sé in 1802 and finally demolished in 1913. This square is now occupied by several café-restaurants, including the famous Café ‘Apolo’, which has existed since 1945.The current town hall building in Rua dos Ferreiros, which the city bought from the Carvalhal Esmeraldo family in 1883, is a magnificent example of 18th century civil architecture.
