Historically, Marienweiher is the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bavaria - even before Altötting. As in Vierzehnheiligen this basilica was a legend by a pilgrimage. It says that at the beginning of the 12th century, a Saxon carter turned to the Blessed Mother during an attack and was then rescued. Therefore, he set up a picture of Mary in a small wooden chapel, which was soon visited by pilgrims.
The Madonna is located in the sanctuary of the Pilgrimage Basilica and dates from the end of the 15th century. The construction period of the first church is unknown. The present basilica has been standing since the 18th century.

The Basilica Marienweiher is one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage churches in Germany. Every year around 8,000 pilgrims come to the district of Marktleugast to the Mother of God of St. Mary's Pond. The church received in 1993 the papal honorary title basilica minor.
The church "Visitation of the Visitation" is at the same time a pilgrimage basilica and parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Marienweiher in the Archdiocese of Bamberg. Within the archdiocese Marienweiher is the largest place of pilgrimage of the Virgin Mary and next to the Bamberger Dom, the Basilika Vierzehnheiligen and the Basilika Gößweinstein one of the four basilicae minores.
