The papal basilica Marienweiher is a wonderful place of rest and contemplation. The baroque interior is well worth seeing.

Historically, Marienweiher is the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bavaria - even before Altötting. As in Vierzehnheiligen this basilica was a legend by a pilgrimage. It says that at the beginning of the 12th century, a Saxon carter turned to the Blessed Mother during an attack and was then rescued. Therefore, he set up a picture of Mary in a small wooden chapel, which was soon visited by pilgrims.
The Madonna is located in the sanctuary of the Pilgrimage Basilica and dates from the end of the 15th century. The construction period of the first church is unknown. The present basilica has been standing since the 18th century.

Every year many thousands of people make pilgrimages to the pilgrimage basilica to the Mother of God of Marienweiher and was first mentioned in a document in 1189 when a carter from Saxony was attacked here and survived this act after invoking Mary. Marienweiher is therefore the oldest Marian pilgrimage site in Bavaria.
In 1993 the pilgrimage church was elevated to the status of a papal basilica by Pope John Paul II.
