This memorial with the names of the executed French resistance fighters written on the ground can be found in the middle of the forest. It is a little thought-provoking to be reminded of the cruelty that took place in such a beautiful, idyllic place.

The place of execution was the Köpfertal shooting range for 24 members of the French resistance group "Reseau Alliance".
During the occupation of France by the German Wehrmacht in World War II, a group of French saw it as their duty to oppose the occupying power. Georges Loustaunau-Lacau founded a resistance network in 1940. By obtaining information for the British secret service, the "Reseau Alliance" - the Allianz network - helped to prepare operations against the Wehrmacht. The members came from all walks of life, from greengrocers to college students. Animal names were used as cover names, which is why the German defense used the term “Noah's Ark” for this group. The alliance had 3000 members in 1943.
In the spring of 1944, numerous resistance fighters were tracked down and arrested in France; 439 of them had to pay for their efforts with their lives.
24 members of the Reseau Alliance were sentenced to death in Freiburg in June 1944. They were then executed in the early morning hours of August 21, 1944 in what was then the shooting range nearby by volleys of guns from 80 Wehrmacht soldiers. It is not known why Heilbronn became the place of execution; the bodies of those shot were initially buried in the Sontheim cemetery and then transferred to France after the Second World War. The names of all 24 people killed can be found on the following pages stolpersteine-heilbronn.de/list/waldweg-im-koepfertal.html and de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Stolpersteine_in_Heilbronn

It used to be a Wehrmacht shooting range.
Resistance fighters were shot here and then stumbling blocks were placed on this relic.
