Best Hiking Routes to Schilfsandstein Quarry near Jägerhaus Nature Reserve

Tips

  • Former quarry where so-called reed sandstone was mined. The name Schilfsandstein comes from the imprints of fossil horsetails in the rock, which were previously mistakenly interpreted as reeds. Today this type of rock is known as the "Stuttgart Formation". The reed sandstone, which is easy to work with, was often used in the past centuries to build houses, bridges, churches and for monumental buildings such as castles or palaces. Even today, reed sandstone is quarried in places and used as a building material for the renovation of historical buildings. The local "Heilbronner sandstone" has great cultural and historical significance for the region around Heilbronn - as you can easily see from the cityscape (see old town hall, old post office, ...)

    The purpose is protective
    1.   the preservation of the abandoned quarry site as an area of natural and cultural-historical significance,
    2.   the retention of the characteristic feature as a valuable habitat for the local wild fauna and flora,
    3.   Securing the area for quiet recreation of the general public that is not tied to facilities of any kind,
