The image of the market square is determined by the up to 300 year old town houses that surround the square, the market fountain from 1699, the chestnut avenue and parked cars.

Heidelsheim was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 770 under the name "Heidolfesheim". The place was probably raised to the status of an imperial city around 1160 under the Staufer emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. Jewish life is first documented in 1375 in Heidelsheim. As a result, the town was repeatedly pledged, including several times to the Margraviate of Baden and the Electoral Palatinate, which led to sometimes armed conflicts over ownership rights. In 1463 Heidelsheim finally fell to the Electoral Palatinate. Around 1530 the Reformation reached Heidelsheim. The town church was shared by Catholics, Reformed, and Lutherans in the centuries that followed. During the Thirty Years' War, Heidelsheim was conquered several times by imperial troops, the French and Swedes, which also affected the population. About 310 of the approximately 1,200 residents were still alive at the end of the war.
On August 12, 1689, the city was almost completely destroyed by French troops, the population fell to around 50. In 1803, after the Electoral Palatinate was dissolved, Heidelsheim fell to Baden.
In 1935, Heidelsheim's city rights were revoked. In 1952 the state government of Württemberg-Baden awarded Heidelsheim the city title again. In the course of district and municipal reform, Heidelsheim became a district of Bruchsal on October 1, 1974, despite stubborn resistance from the population to the incorporation.

Historic town center with various old and partly well-preserved houses, towers, walls, etc. The café "Servus Anni" is recommended for a stop.
