Hiking

A historical hiking trail is the Rußbuttensteig. Mentioned for the first time in 1369, it connects Lichtentanne and Schönfels by the shortest route and, after being redesigned in 1992, was handed over to its intended purpose as a hiking trail.
Historically, the trail served as a transport route to Leipzig for the soot extracted from crackling herds and pitch huts in the area. There it was processed into wagon grease, sealant for barrels and ships, medicines, oven and boot wax and printer's ink.
