The stage was founded as the New German Theater (1888–1938).
The opening of the Czech National Theater in 1883 awakened the desire of the German-speaking population of Prague for their own opera stage. For this purpose, the German Theater Association was founded that same year and the collection of funds began. In 1886, the plan was approved and a piece of land was purchased from Leopoldine Grustner von Grussdorf (Smetanka estate), on whose land the New Town Theater already stood, built according to plans by Josef Niklas von Stöger.
