The 150-year-old St. Mary's Grotto in Kraimoos, a district of Bernau, used to be a popular place for the people of Bernau to hold church celebrations such as May devotions, prayers, field masses and primacy celebrations. For a long time it seemed to have been forgotten, but the Bernauer mountain riflemen remembered it.
Therefore, it was very important to the Bernau mountain riflemen to restore this tuff stone grotto as a memorial for their alumni. A memorial plaque on the Mariengrotto indicates this importance. The Mariengrotto has a much more far-reaching meaning, because Our Lady has been the patron saint of mountain riflemen for centuries.

After the re-establishment of the Bernau mountain rifle company in October 2000, the restoration of the Mariengrotte was the first major project to be completed.

After the renovation of the Mariengrotte by the company, citizens of Bernau and mountain riflemen can now revive their celebrations and events there.
The mountain riflemen celebrate a May devotion every year in this idyllic location and the anniversary of their re-establishment in mid-October.
