St. Peter's Church (Catholic) - Mainz 🚴‍♂️

With its rich Rococo interior, St. Peter's Catholic Church is one of the most important Baroque buildings in Mainz. It was originally the collegiate church of St. Peter's Abbey, which had existed since the 10th century, outside the city walls, and was founded in 944 by Archbishop Frederick of Lorraine. It was completely destroyed during the Swedish invasion of the Thirty Years' War in 1631. It wasn't until 1749-1756 that the current new building, a Baroque hall with a double-tower façade, was constructed on the site of the demolished parish church of St. Mary. Following the extensive war damage, the building underwent numerous repairs and renovations. In 1989, after more than ten years of restoration, the elegant church with its twin onion domes was returned to the parish in almost new condition.
