    A "warning" donation
In 1526, the Archbishop of Mainz, Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg, donated the impressive fountain to the citizens of his city, which is today not only the oldest but also the most beautiful Renaissance fountain in Germany. But this draw well is not only artistically significant, but also as a contemporary historical symbol of power relations.

At a time when there was no longer a central water supply and public fountains with high-quality water were rare, the Archbishop's donation initially appears generous. If you look more closely, you can clearly see political and didactic elements in the scenes depicted. They are reminiscent of the Peasants' War, which was also bloodily suppressed in Mainz.

The Marktbrunnen in Mainz is a Renaissance fountain on the market. It was donated in 1526 by Elector Albrecht of Brandenburg and was probably created in the workshop of the Mainz sculptor Peter Schro.
