The Garkoschke recreation area is a large sand dune. Immediately after the last ice age, sands from the area of today's Lieberoser Heide were blown on and deposited here. It is not known where the dune got its name from. The only thing that is certain is that a Hans Garkoschke lived near the area in the 18th century. In the course of the construction of the Jänschwalde power plant, a new development area was built in Peitz in the 1970s. Significant amounts of sand had to be brought in to create a subsurface that was worth building. The sand was taken from this dune area. From this point, an idyllic bathing lake was created. In the meantime, vegetation has settled on most bank areas, so that the lake now looks like a natural body of water. Today, a beach area invites you to enjoy swimming.
