Minden Cathedral was the episcopal church of the diocese of Minden, founded in Minden around 800 by Charlemagne. The Catholic diocese moved closer to Protestantism during the Reformation in the middle of the 16th century. With the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the diocese was de facto abolished, as was the Bishopric of Minden, which emerged from the diocese as a spiritual territory. After the diocese was abolished, the cathedral received the status of a Roman Catholic parish church, which was elevated to a provost church in 1859. Today it belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn.
