        It was on January 28, 1964 when a US Air Force aircraft took off from Wiesbaden Air Force Base on a training flight. There were three pilots on board. Around an hour after take-off, the aircraft penetrated 90 kilometers into the airspace of the GDR near Mühlhausen. Shortly afterwards, the twin-engine T-39 jet was shot down by two Soviet MIG-19 fighter pilots. The US pilots did not previously react to radio messages from the American or Soviet side, nor to signals from the Russian pilots flanking them, and even warning shots were unsuccessful. None of the three crew members survived the shooting down. In 1998, a memorial stone with the names of the officers killed was unveiled near the crash site.
