Vejle means ford. It became the name for the settlement that was built on an island in the middle of the Vejle Ådalen, where the Grejs Å flows into the Vejle Å, shortly before it flows into the fjord.
First, the south side of the island around Søndergade was built, later the city spread to the north. Vejle was completely surrounded by watercourses: the two arms of the Grejs Å with the Omløbsåen in the west and the Mølleåen in the east. In the south, the Sønderåen formed the border and in the north, the Midtåen.
