Gandersheim Castle rises directly on the Gande River and was first mentioned in documents in 1318. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Dukes of Brunswick had the castle rebuilt. Gate tower, palace and a stair tower of the castle, which is the seat of the district court today, are still there.
