The building combines modern and traditional forms and materials and, thanks to its idiosyncratic design, is one of the most noteworthy post-war church buildings in Hamburg. The construction stretched under the direction of Kurt Schwarze from 1957 to 1960. The nave consists of two reinforced concrete shells with a parabolic cross-section, which are clad with aluminum and which fold out into window slits. The facades of the east and west sides are decorated with elaborate, differently patterned brick cladding. Exterior construction and interior consistently match. The slender, 37 m high and made of concrete slabs crowned by a 4 m high cross is also connected to the nave by a low connecting structure.

In the course of use, more buildings were gradually grouped around the church. Today the pastorate, the parish hall and a kindergarten are in the immediate vicinity.

In 1995 the entire church was restored by Bernhard Hirche, who at the same time changed the originally high-contrast color scheme in the interior to shades of white and gray.

The church, which was built in 1960, was supposed to be called "Bethlehem Church", since the first nameless chapel was created from a converted stable building of the state estate and Jesus is said to have been born in the stable at Bethlehem. But when the altar relief "Christ with spreading arms" commissioned by the artist Robert Müller-Warnke, who was in the school tradition of Ernst Barlach, was put up in the church a month before the ordination, it was so dominant for the church interior, that the church fathers and mothers recognized in it the crucified, risen and blessing Christ, in one word: the Redeemer. So you chose the name: Church of the Redeemer.
The barrel vault of the nave with the contrasting triple-tiered tower made of concrete slices deliberately stands out from residential buildings and the old trees in the area according to the will of the architect Kurt Schwarze. The Erlöserkirche marks the beginning of modern church building in Hamburg with a shell construction made of reinforced concrete. Other materials such as brick, aluminum and glass were juxtaposed with the concrete in a playful manner.
The church is an almost futuristic building. The construction with the staggered tower made of reinforced concrete and the nave made of bowl-shaped reinforced concrete with aluminum outer skin is quite unique in the world. Similar church buildings exist only two or three times around the world.
The Redeemer Church has been a listed building since 1999.
