Today, few clues remain in Hamburg-Wandsbek that there once was a famous palace with an equally famous park. Between 1772 and 1778, the Danish Finance Minister Heinrich Carl Graf von Schimmelmann built a magnificent palace on the foundations of Wandesburg, the former manor house of a noble estate. At the same time, he also had the palace park redesigned, a reminder of which the Wandsbeker Gehölz still stands today.

The approximately two-kilometer-long strip of forest between Wandsbeker Markt and Osterkamp in the Hamburg district of Marienthal is now an important recreational area for local residents. Until 1860, the area belonged to the estate surrounding the palace, when it was saved from destruction by a courageous decision by the then local administration. From 1857, Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn owned the estate, later known as Marienthal.

Although the forest was later divided into four groves by the Hamburg-Lübeck railway line and several streets, it nevertheless developed into a popular local recreation area. The Wandsbeker Gehölz is ideal for jogging, walking, or simply strolling. Numerous benches, for example, by one of the ponds amidst the beautiful old trees, predominantly oak and beech, invite you to linger. Children are provided with playgrounds and a soccer field with soccer goals.

One relic from the Wandsbeker Gehölz's past has been preserved here to this day: a sandstone vase that Schimmelmann brought with him along the Elbe path in 1757 with extensive luggage and placed in his newly designed palace gardens. You might also spot the Claudius memorial stone.

It was erected in the palace gardens in 1840 to mark the 100th birthday of Matthias Claudius, Wandsbek's most famous citizen. In addition to the poet's biographical details, the stone also features the emblems of the "Wandsbek Messenger": hat, cane, and bag. Claudius, who lived in Wandsbek for almost 45 years, worked here as an editor of the trade newspaper "Der Wandsbeker Bothe," founded by Schimmelmann and incidentally the first German popular newspaper. After the stone had to be temporarily relocated due to the subdivision of the palace gardens, it now stands in the Wandsbeker Gehölz and has been a listed monument since 1943.
