    History 'Pier Nieuwpoort'

A picket fence is the entrance to a port. This breaks the force of the waves and prevents silting up, making access safer. The first western tower with a length of 490 meters was driven at the mouth of the harbor channel in 1865. The pile head was much wider than it is today. It was crowned with a typical light beacon and a lovely drinking house was also operated on the pile head. The western tower had a 2 meter wide walkway and two stairs to the beach, one approximately in the middle and the second at head level. The eastern stake was driven in 1872 with a length of 543 meters.

Before the First World War, a pile of 400 meters in length ran from the western tower as an extension along the left bank of the harbor channel to the place where the former yacht club K.Y.C.N. There was a small harbor for the shrimp boats, which offered their catch for sale to the people passing by. The western head was torn loose from the walkway during the heavy storm of September 30, 1911 and was blown about two hundred meters westward.

The picket fence was destroyed during the 1914-18 war. The repairs only started in 1925 and were completed in 1931. The heads on both palings became smaller. There was no room left for a drinking house on the western tower. Both heads were fitted with a guiding light.
During the Second World War no public was allowed on the fence. In 1941 the Germans dynamited the eastern tower. When the Germans withdrew from Nieuwpoort in September 1944, the Germans set the fortress on fire.

Renewal of the picket fences on February 1, 1994.
An information stand in a container placed in front of the warehouse building gives an idea of the planned renovation. During this renovation, the walking path has been widened to 5 meters. The head of the western structure was doubled in surface area (40x15 meters). On the light towers, the fog bells with outer hammer made of bronze were replaced by an electronic fog horn. The stairs to the beach at the pile head disappeared.

The renovated palings were officially inaugurated at the beginning of 1999.
The picket fence quickly became one of the main attractions for those on holiday, who enjoyed the pleasures of fishing with a casting line or hauling net.

Pickets are accessible to the disabled.
