The first documentary mention of the place was on April 27, 1039 as Brunwardesrot. The place was probably around 1360 the seat of a bailiwick with a later almost completely disappeared castle Brotterode. In addition to wood processing, iron mining and processing have been at home since the Middle Ages, from which the small iron industry and wire drawing, tobacco processing and later vehicle electrics developed in the 19th century. Since 1952 the holiday business has been booming and Brotterode has become a center of winter sports (Wikipedia).
