Tips

  • In 1999, Europe's largest sculpture was created by Prof. Jörg Immendorff from 234 tons of cast iron. It measures 25 meters high. In total it consists of 49 individual parts. For this work, Immendorff was inspired by the winter oak, which can be seen in paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. The winter oak is a symbol of the power of nature. The artist's motto "Disguised by tree and bark, the painter's brush becomes a spade". As a sign of the hopeful new beginning, the mayor at the time insisted that a single leaf be added to the tree. Immendorff agreed, but designed it in such a way that it would be difficult to discover the sheet.
