Bolton Castle is a magnificent 14th-century castle in a village of almost the same name – Castle Bolton. The quadrangular castle was built by the 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton, Richard, costing 18,000 Marks at the time. In the 16th century, the castle was torched under the orders of King Henry VIII after the 8th Baron Scrope supported a rebellion against his religious reforms. But, the damage was repaired after a few years. 30 years later, Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner at the castle for six months. Today, the castle is owned by a descendant of Emanuel Scrope and is managed as an attraction. You can visit the castle and gardens, as well as a maze, wild flower meadow and vineyard. The castle is open from 10am - 5pm from 1st April until 1st November. For more information, see: boltoncastle.co.uk
