Turning off the A684 at West Witton, the land rises sharply in front of you. As soon as the houses end, the climb begins. The first ramp is a little warm up. A flatter section leads to a steep left/right/left all at around 20%. Pray for no cars approaching on that last left swing as the inside of the curve is at least 30%! It is a quiet road on the whole. Having conquered the hairpins, the remainder is easier. Great views to your left.
Arriving at the farm & stables by the gallops, left takes you along an escarpment with more fine views to the left. If you carry on right, the road continues to climb the flanks of Penhill. There is a viewpoint at the top with great scenes in every direction. The North York Moors can be seen away to the East.
Not a long climb, but tough & rewarding.
