From 1785 until 1896, the Wey and Arun Canal was used to transport goods on large barges from Wey and Goldaming to Newbridge. Engineered by Josias Jessop, the canal was considered to be important for the with France. However, the war was over before the canal was complete.
Following its closure, the canal fell into a state of disrepair until the mid 20th century when a Trust formed to protect the waterway. Today, a multi-million pound restoration has repaired some of the bridges and locks such as Devil's Hole Lock when was destroyed during a training exercise by the Canadian army in 1942.
