The powder tower and prison tower belonged to the medieval town fortifications. It survived the destruction of 1689 and is therefore one of the few surviving structural testimonies of the old residential city. The east and south sides of the city wall met at this corner tower. Only in the course of the 19th century was the tower named after Schinderhannes.

The well-known robber "Schinderhannes" (Johannes Bückler 1778/-79 - 1803) was held prisoner in Simmern from February until a spectacular escape from prison in August 1799 because the prison tower was considered particularly safe. The local history museum founded in 1921 (today the Hunsrück Museum) was housed in the tower until 1930. Until the construction of the forest youth hostel in Sargenroth in the 1970s, the upper floor of the tower even served as a youth hostel.

The renovation of the tower was completed in 2006.

There is a Schinderhannes exhibition in the attic where Schinderhannes' original hat is on display!

At the eastern corner of the former city fortifications there is a tower that originally served as a powder magazine and prison room. It was one of the few buildings that survived the great fire and destruction of 1689. The steep, baroque conical roof and the west staircase were added to the tower in 1750.

It bears its name after the notorious robber Johannes Bückler, known as "Schinderhannes". After his capture in Schneppenbach at the end of February 1799, he was taken to Simmern and imprisoned there. During the night of August 19th, 1799, he managed to escape from the tower, which had been considered escape-proof until then. Today, the Schinderhannes Tower serves as an event space.

The upper floors with the exhibition room can only be visited as part of a guided tour. However, the dungeon on the ground floor of the Schinderhannesturm is open Wednesdays to Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. until further notice. Guided tours on request.

The Schinderhannes tower on the eastern corner of the former fortification has also been preserved. Previously it was the Powder Tower. In 1680 it offered itself as a prison because it had thick walls and only a few modifications were necessary, such as walling up the lower window openings and the doors. Already you had a magnificent dungeon. The occupant was admitted 6m into the dark hole through a flap. In 1750 the tower received its baroque conical roof and the west staircase. The tower was considered escape-proof until Johannes Bückler taught the city fathers otherwise.

According to the sign in the door, the tower is currently closed, the museum would have opened at 2 p.m. today
