The "Mont Rigi" on the country road between Eupen and Malmedy is one of the highest points in Belgium at 675m and is only a few hundred meters away from the 694m high "Signal de Botrange", the highest point in Belgium. The name is derived from the famous Swiss mountain, the Rigi on Lake Lucerne. This was thought up by the then mayor of Waimes, who named several places in his community after such illustrious names.
After the country road was completed in 1856, a hostel and guest house were built for the first time on Mont Rigi. This served as a rest stop for people and horses on the arduous journey through the Venn, which was still completely unforested at the time. Today it is a tourist hub and starting point for hikes and also the starting point for today's hike.

The Hotel-Restaurant Mon Rigi has a wonderful terrace with a view of the Venn. Ideally located to end a beautiful hike properly. Sun loungers are available. Service is friendly. Prices a little higher, but that's normal for Belgium.

Especially in winter, a stop here is a good idea to review the hike over a good meal. The staff is friendly and the price-performance ratio is o.k. .
