Construction began on the chapel on July 5, 1965, the foundation stone was laid on September 13, the topping-out ceremony on October 20 and inauguration on October 16, 1966.
The eye-catcher in the interior of the church is the tapestry that was installed over the altar in 1991. The motif is the "Wittenseer Engel", drawn by the local painter Carl Lambertz, who died in 1996, and the carpet was woven by Regina Lass.
