In the park on the Ilm, on a small plateau, on the steep slope between the artificial ruin and the clapboard house, there is the only monument that commemorates the great poet and playwright on the European mainland.
Much has been done from Weimar to ensure that William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was discovered and promoted for German readers and theater-goers.
Christoph Martin Wieland (1733-1813) translated works by Shakespeare into German and Goethe performed several of them as the Weimar theater director.
