What is special about meadow orchards? In contrast to orchards, orchards are only cultivated extensively, i.e. very carefully, which means that chemical pesticides and mineral fertilizers are hardly used. As a result, meadow orchards are particularly valuable as a habitat for animals and plants.

A meadow orchard is a feast for the eyes in every season - especially in spring.

The city of Naumburg, together with the Pomologists' Association and the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, awards the Oberdieck Prize at the Pomology Days that have taken place in the town on the small Elbe at the end of October since 1998. This prize is awarded to people who have achieved outstanding achievements in the area of conservation of plant genetic resources in fruit growing. The prize is named after Johann Georg Conrad Oberdieck (1794 - 1880), one of the most important German pomologists of the 19th century.

The award winners have now agreed to make a lasting statement about the importance of apples, pears and cherries as healthy food and cultural goods by donating a fruit tree.

The project was realized under the leadership of Claudia Thönen (City of Naumburg) on a meadow near the St. Martin house, directly on the premium hiking trail Habichtswaldsteig. The result is an impressive row of trees, which is now supplemented by one specimen each year. The trees are each provided with a sign that contains a drawing and a brief explanation of the type of fruit in question. The name of the donor and the year on which the Oberdieck Prize was awarded are also listed. The association Raum für Natur e. V. has sponsored the "Oberdiecks Wiese" and financed the planting.
