As a direct access to the Main and as a customs station, the Zollturm (Customs Tower) or the associated Zolltor (Customs Gate) were of particular importance for a long time. Today, the city tower houses the Höchster Geschichtsverein (Höchst Historical Society).

The customs tower with the customs gate is part of the Höchst city fortifications and its basic structure dates from the middle of the 14th century; according to a dendrochronological report, its completion is before 1360. Like the neighboring house Der Karpfen, the customs tower was badly damaged in the Thirty Years War and in 1664 rebuilt. The eye-catching timber frame construction on the north side of the customs gate is a supporting device on which the building rests.

Anyone who reduces Höchst to its first impression (usually a train station, shopping street, or industrial park) does this city (a district of Frankfurt since 1971) a great injustice.
The Schlossplatz, the old town, the castle itself, the Bolongaropalast, or the Main riverbank are a gem that most people don't associate with the name Höchst. Stroll through it, breathe in history, drink Äppler, but above all, don't "ignore" it.
