The collegiate and lecture hall buildings of the former University of Altdorf were built in 1575 as a school for children Nuremberg aristocratic families in the Renaissance style. A few years later, the school was raised to the Academy and in 1623 converted into a university. The university became known through its faculties of medicine (especially for the development of surgery and the long-term standard compendium of Lorenz Heister), law and science (including basic research on the photosensitivity of silver salts, Schulzegraphie, as the basis of photography). In addition to the (partly reconstructed) botanical gardens, there was also an astronomical observatory and a chemical laboratory. The university in Altdorf existed until 1809 as a university; the buildings are as a typical university complex a vivid testimony of German university history, since they remained largely unchanged in the state of the 18th century Wikipedia
