One of the largest dune fields in Bavaria is located around Nuremberg. In the Reichswald north-west of Altdorf, there are also sands that were deposited by ice-age rivers under long stretched shifting sand dunes. As a result, particularly thick accumulations of sand, up to 40 meters thick, were formed here.
