The elements have wrestled with each other and influenced each other for millions of years. The massive earth movements are over, but beneath the surface, deep below, the mineral and carbon dioxide springs of the Volcanic Eifel bubble up.

Between the upper end of the Wolfsschlucht Gorge and the town of Wassenach lies the "Roman Fountain." Sven von Loga writes about this in "12 Hikes on the Trail of Volcanism in the Eastern Eifel":
"Here, too, the iron-rich water colors the fountain casing and the surrounding paving stones red, but above all, it bubbles quite profusely. Volcanic carbon dioxide rises from the subsoil and serves as a sign of the active volcanism in the region."
