It was built on land previously used for agriculture and was intended to serve as a connecting element between the formerly independent districts of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel, and Oberkassel.
Landscape architects such as Gottfried Hansjakob designed the area over several years into a diverse and scenic park.
The Rheinaue park has been a listed historical monument since 2017.
